Things to Do During the Spring on Southern Vancouver Island

Victoria, BC is gorgeous all year round, but springtime is when the city explodes in colour. Long before the snow melts and the ice thaws throughout the rest of the country, Victoria residents are treated to cherry blossom trees that seem to erupt in pinks and white overnight. In turn, daffodils and tulips dazzle in floral gardens throughout the city as an intoxicating fresh, spring scent lingers in the air.

And let’s not forget the return of the sun! Nothing makes local Victorians smile more than the warm sun after a winter of dreary rain. If you’ve been hibernating this winter, visit Victoria and return to the great outdoors!

Whether you’re looking for culture or adventure, Victoria has you covered. Here are just a few of the treats that lie in store this spring.

Kicking off the 154th Highland Games and Celtic Festival is the Tartan Parade through downtown Victoria followed by various events throughout the week such as the Kilted Golf Tournament, Tilted Kilt Pubcrawl, and the Torchlight Clan Ceremony. This festival runs for 10 spectacular days and culminates in the Highland Games Victoria weekend on May 20-22.

Victoria, BC Swiftsure Yacht RaceThe Swiftsure International Yacht Race is more than just yacht racing and runs May 25-29. Start the weekend off by walking the docks and watching the boats come in. And while you’re there, don’t forget to check out Captain Jack Sparrow and Scarlett who will be entertaining. Then stop by the Harbour Days Market featuring about 28 stalls and food vendors.

The races start Saturday morning following a pancake breakfast. Be sure to stick around after as the Royal Canadian Air Force will conduct a search and rescue followed by various safety demonstrations.

For all you movie buffs, check out the Victoria Film Festival, February 3-12, where they will be screening more than 100 films. Throughout the week they have different activities such as Jammies & Toons for the kids and Play the Fort, where every day you can take in a different reality experience.

These include such prestigious awards as the classical voice Rose Bowl and, for piano, the city of Victoria Medallion Tray. As well, the Roberto and Mary Wood Scholarship, the largest of its type in Canada, will be presented.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Uno Fest, a compilation of solo experimental theatre and contemporary performances. You can catch these performances from May 17-27: “A great solo show is theatre in its most concentrated form: a performer, an audience, a story to be told.”
